TEAMS Raises £60k for Pakistan Orphans in Partnership with READ Foundation

Following the devastating floods in Sep 2010 in Pakistan there has been a dramatic rise in the number of orphans in the affected areas, besides these exceptional circumstances there are a huge number of children who do not normally have the basic human right of education in Pakistan.

TEAMS has a keen focus on education, it’s participants feel that education has an immense impact on human society. It is the only true long term strategy to overcoming poverty and bringing about sustainable change.

Building on the work that we have already done in Pakistan following the floods we wanted to focus on sustainable change. TEAMS was introduced to READ foundation and through this heard about the fantastic work they have been doing for more than a decade. They currently run 330+ schools and support over 10,000 children including orphans with education.

TEAMS charity division headed up by Mohamed Vhora and Saleem Sheikh jumped into action to arrange first time ever READ foundation charity dinner in Leicester. Supported by both Tahir Begg and his team and Zahid Sheikh chair of TEAMS. The event was held on the 24th of June 2011 at The Venue on Gwendolon Road Leicester.

It was a spectacular evening hosted by Yusuf Chambers, attended by the Leicester community, special guests included Lord & Lady Sheikh, Resham Singh Sandhu the High Sheriff of Leicester & Pakistan Cricketer Abdul Razzaq. The evening consisted of stalls, Live Nasheed artists Ashique-al-Rasool, a live auction hosted by Abdul-Khalik Vhoraand a touching rap by the local BUILD girls group.

For the Audience the reality of the situation hit home on the evening as the many presenters talked about the current situation and as the pictures spoke about the hunger for education the children have.

In total the event raised £60k included sponsorship of 7 schools and many orphans. The hugely successful Auction raised in excess of £5k and included a 18th Century Quran, Large Islamic Artifact sponsored by Halal Subway London Road, Hamper sponsored by Sweetilicious, Sheesha sponsored by Viva-Sheesha, a lovely cake sponsored by Afreen, Vouchers from Bombay Bites, Albela, Mumtaz Bradford & The Curve Theatre.

This event would not have been possible without the help of our numerous volunteers with a lead role played by Parveen Sheikh from Stripes Events Managment and Aisha Yunus. A huge thank you them.

TEAMS would also like to give big thank you to all of our sponsors without which again this event wouldn’t have been the success it was.
